Registration/Participation

As is evident from the Confirmed Plenary Speakers and the themes identified for the Parallel Sessions, the First DIVERSITAS Open Science Conference promises to be an outstanding opportunity to probe biodiversity issues from the global perspective.

Due to the size of the facilities at the Hotel Mision de Los Angeles, participation will be limited to approximately 500 people.

DIVERSITAS is currently developing an online system to manage conference registration and hotel reservations. Please revisit this area of the DIVERSITAS: OSC1 website in March 2005.

Abstract Submission Guidelines

ABSTRACT SUBMISSION DEADLINE:
Wednesday, 31 March 2005

Abstracts can be submitted only online via the DIVERSITAS: OSC1 website: www.diversitas-osc1.org. Following the submission deadline (31 March 2005) each abstract will be reviewed according to the following criteria:

1. Overall scientific quality
2. Relevance to the DIVERSITAS Science Plan
3. Demonstration of innovative approaches in biodiversity science

Authors will be notified by e-mail regarding the outcome of the abstract review in early June 2005.

Preparing your abstract submission…

1. Submit only one abstract. Your name may appear as Lead Author on only one abstract submission. However, you may be listed as a secondary author on additional abstracts.

2. Type of submission. Indicate whether you feel your material is best suited to an Oral or Poster presentation (Note: Upon review, the DIVERSITAS: OSC1 Scientific Committee will make a final decision.)

3. Title. The title of your abstract should give a clear indication of the subject area of your research.

4. Keywords. Indicate five (5) key words from your abstract. These will be used to help determine which reviewer will receive your abstract, as well as to facilitate subject searching of accepted abstracts on the DIVERSITAS OSC1 website.

5. Abstract text. Before entering information on the online abstract submission form, we suggest that you prepare the abstract text in a word processing software (e.g. MS Word). Save a copy of the file with the abstract text only (no title or authors). This file can be used to ‘cut and paste’ your abstract text into the appropriate field of the online submission form. Special characters (numbers, symbols, etc) are widely supported.

Abstract format. Review the following guidelines carefully; abstracts that do not conform to these criteria will not be reviewed.

  • The abstract text must not exceed 2000 characters (~300 words), including spaces. (Separate fields are provided for titles and authors; these elements are not considered within the total length of the abstract.)

  • The following Headings should be used to support a structured abstract layout:

    i. Background and Goal of Study. The problem being addressed, and if relevant, the hypothesis to be tested.

ii. Materials and Methods. Avoid abbreviations if possible; do not invent new abbreviations: if you must use abbreviations, try to use explicit ones.

iii. Results and Discussion. Use SI units for all measurements.

    iv. Conclusion(s)..

  • No tables, no graphics allowed.

  • No literature cited.

Abstracts will not be edited prior to review. Abstracts will be reviewed according to the criteria identified in the introductory paragraph of this document. However, the quality of the written text will also be considered as an indication of the Lead Author’s suitability for oral/poster presentation at the Conference. It may be advisable to obtain language assistance before submitting your abstract. Accepted abstracts will be edited for spelling and grammar prior to being used in Conference communication materials (e.g. website, conference programme, abstract book, etc.).

6. Select a topic. Review the Conference Topics and select the topic(s) which most closely relate(s) to the field of research covered in your abstract. This information will also be used to determine which reviewer will receive your abstract and to schedule accepted abstracts into thematic symposia. (Note: The DIVERSITAS: OSC1 Scientific Committee may choose to place an accepted abstract within an alternate session or symposium.)

7. Abstract author(s): The online submission form requires full contact information for the Lead Author. To identify Other Authors, simply click on the appropriate button (note: no more than four (4) additional authors can be included.) Once all authors have been added, select ‘Continue with Submission’ to proceed with final steps.

8. The review process. Each abstract will be judged by two reviewers. The Scientific Committee will then choose from among recommended abstracts to develop a science programme that represents a broad cross-section of disciplines and geographical regions. Authors will be notified of the acceptance or rejection of their abstract by early June 2005.

9. Young Scientist Award. Young scientists (35 years of age or younger as of November 2005) are encouraged to identify themselves as being eligible for the DIVERSITAS: OSC1 Young Scientist Award.

10. If your abstract is accepted. Once an abstract is accepted, the author commits him/herself to present this work at the DIVERSITAS: OSC1. As Conference attendance is limited to ~500 participants, DIVERSITAS will tentatively reserve a spot for the Lead Author of each accepted abstract (no spaces will be reserved for Other Authors). Lead Authors must register before 15 August 2005 to confirm their presentation.

11. Travel Grants. DIVERSITAS is actively seeking funding for travel grants to support the participation of young scientists and scientists from developing countries. More information will be provided to eligible Lead Authors upon acceptance of their abstracts.

12. More information. DIVERSITAS will provide more detailed instructions regarding actual Oral and Poster presentations to authors of accepted abstracts at a later date. If you have any additional questions concerning the Abstract Submission Form or the above Guidelines, please contact DIVERSITAS directly:
